After spending the morning at the Gary Rom salon at Brooklyn Mall, I thought I’d let you in on what goes on behind the scenes when you book for a treatment and a colour.
As any girl knows, going in for highlights can be a lengthy process and if you’re going blonder you might as well cancel all brunch plans because this might take a while (the price we pay for shimmery blonde hair). The end results though are always worth it. I’m very particular when it comes to my hair and especially when it comes to my shade of blonde. It has taken months to achieve this natural bronzed blonde that both my Agents from New York and I are happy with and I couldn’t thank Roelene Mey from Gary Rom hairdressing enough.
There’s more to ‘walking into a salon and getting highlights’ than you’d typically imagine. At Gary Rom they go through a step by step process to ensure that your hair is in the correct condition for the hair molecules to grip the colour treatments. They look at the natural hair level, the undercoat tone that comes through, the colour reflection, the grey scale (scored a 0 here so my youth is treating me well), matching the mid length to the roots and the integrity of your hair. Highlights just went from your typical Saturday morning hair appointment to a full on science class that teaches you more about your hair than you’d like to admit that you know.
Once you’ve been well informed of the condition of your hair they then prep your hair for the colour treatment using a Silk Gloss treatment, you sit under the K-mist machine for 10 minutes and then wash and dry. The hair should be fully prepped to absorb all the colour. After application of the highlights you have about 30-40 minutes to relax and enjoy your complimentary meal (provided you are getting a colour treatment and did I mention they have wine too?) and read a few magazines while the colour sets. After washing out the colour treatment, they apply a toner and then dry and style your hair.
Even though it may take some time away from your busy schedules I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to look after your hair (like you would with moisturising your skin).
Walking out of the Gary Rom Salon I know exactly what’s going on up there, from root to tip and every hair molecule in-between. It’s not only a good investment to treat your hair once in a while but what better feeling do you get than walking out of a hair salon with a freshly brewed blow wave. Hair on Fleek!
